Family Dog Views and News from JJ
Hi, I'm JJ, one of the founders of Family Dog Central. I'm here to share info with you, from a dog's point of view.

Don't end up LOST and unable to make it home - tell your owners to put a collar (with ID tags!) on you at all times - this will ensure that if you ever get loose, someone will be able to return you home safely.  Also - a microchip is another way to help those humans get you home safely, but make sure to tell them to register your number and keep the contact info up-to-date.

Dog ID Tags - tell your owners to go online (humanebroward.com) and order them or they can find the machines to make them at Petco, PetsMart or Pet Supermarket stores.

Is your owner giving you WAY too much junk food and making you fat?  Well, my bro and I LOVE to snack on carrot chips and apples slices!  Put it on the list for next Publix trip!

How to Select a "Top Notch" Dog Daycare Facility
Logan Goriss - Founder of Family Dog Central
Before selecting a facility, schedule a tour of the facility. After the tour and discussions with the staff, you should feel a sense of confidence that your dog will be provided the best possible care in a safe and secure environment.

The Facility
Overall - does the facility appear clean? Is the facility climate controlled? What are the safety/emergency procedures? Will someone be there 24/7 with your dog? Where does my dog sleep? What is a "typical" day for your dog (keep in mind, dog daycare can be very different depending on the facility you select). How are dogs assigned to play groups? How much play time does he/she receive? What about naptime? How much time does your dog spend in a crate, run?

The Application/Interview Process
To ensure the safety of everyone (staff and dogs!) the facility should have an application/interview (temperament testing) process to ensure the daycare environment will be beneficial for your dog. Keep in mind, dog daycare will not be the best option for all dogs. The facility should ask for proof of your dog's current vaccinations including distemper, parvo, rabies and bordetella.
It's a Dog's Life for Joanna Goriss and Family Dog Central

Family Dog Central in Deerfield Beach
Leaving a 20-year career in corporate accounting, Joanna Goriss is going to the dogs. Rather, the dogs are coming to her.

Family Dog Central, Inc., a doggie day care center, will open its doors in October 2007 as a result of four years of research, planning and the quest for the perfect location. Joanna got the idea to start the business in September of 2003, when the canine camp where she and her husband Jeff had been taking their two Labrador Retrievers closed.

"I loved the structured environment. JJ and Logan had time to play, eat and mingle with other dogs. Then, all of a sudden, we didn't have a place to take them any more," said Joanna.
Keep your Dog Safe & Happy this Holiday Season
By Joanna Goriss, Top Dog

Busy holiday schedules, steady streams of strangers entering the house and even changes to your home such as rearranging furniture to put the tree up can stress out a dog.  Limit stress by maintaining your dog's regular exercise and feeding schedule.  Remember, a tired dog is a good dog.  Exercise your dog prior to the guests arriving.  When possible, confine your dog in a crate or a safe room when visitors come and go.  Provide your dog with a new toy or treat as a distraction.  You can even bring your dog to Family Dog Central while you entertain! Here are a few more important tips:

Holiday Decorations
-Anchor the Christmas tree - this will keep your dog from toppling it
-Cover the water from the base of the tree - this can harbor dangerous bacteria & chemicals
-Keep pine needles cleaned up - needles can cause intestinal problems
-Keep breakable ornaments away from the bottom of the tree - to prevent "the tail" from knocking them down
-Skip the tinsel - dogs that eat tinsel can get serious intestinal problems
-Keep toxic plants and candles far from the dog's reach - to name a few: Christmas cactus, holly, lilies, mistletoe, poinsettia, hemlock & ivy

People Food
-Holiday "people" food is NOT good for your dog: fatty meat, garlic, onion, nuts, chocolate, cookies and cakes can harm dogs - problems can range from vomiting/diarrhea to pancreatitis
-Cooked turkey or chicken bones are very dangerous to your dog - stick to compressed rawhides or other bones specifically designed for dogs to chew

Dogs should not be surprise "holiday gifts"
Please do not give dogs as a surprise gift - this is a VERY bad idea for many reasons.  Sometimes the person getting the surprise might not want to commit to giving the dog a forever home (or maybe the breed you select is not the "best" fit for the person's lifestyle).  Many "holiday gifts" end up at Animal Care desperately seeking a permanent home.  Instead of giving the dog as a gift, consider giving a leash, collar, breed specific book or even a gift certificate for training.   This way, after the holidays the person can spend time researching a particular breed and ensure that they are getting the most suitable dog for them.
