ACL Surgery (in JJ's words)
Most of you all know me, I'm JJ, the resident dog here at FDC. I'm not the most active yellow lab (believe it or not...all of us labs don't live to run, fetch & swim!). A couple months ago I decided to run for a few minutes with Buddy (he's a high energy black lab!) and guess what, I tripped in the grass and somehow tore my cruciate ligament (it helps hold my kneecap, thigh, and shin bone together). It was pretty painful and for days I walked with three legs.
After going to several doctors and getting lots of opinions, my Mom and Dad brought me to have surgery, because without it I could've developed arthritis, or had a lame leg for the rest of my life. The doctor performed TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement) surgery, and good thing I was asleep for it because they had to cut my leg open to push part of my shin bone forward to realign it with my kneecap! After that, they put a bone spacer, plates and screws in to keep my bone from moving. You might say I have a robo-leg now!
Mom and Dad take me to rehab every week to exercise my muscles with swimming, (which I don't like very much), the treadmill, and my most favorite dog massages from Hope! The doctors say I am "off the charts" as far as the healing process goes, so I should be back to normal in a couple months. In the meantime, you can always stop by to give me some sympathy pets, or even some snacks (I live for those!). |

What to Do if You Suspect Dog Abuse
Did you know? May 4th - 10th is Be Kind to Animals Week
Unfortunately, dog abuse is something that happens way too often. Most abused dogs will continue to lead awful and mistreated days throughout their lives, unless somebody decides to finally step in and put a halt to this intolerable behavior.
If you suspect your neighbor, or even a friend of dog abuse or neglect, here are a few steps to take to help resolve this horrible situation.
· Don't confront the owner yourself. Instead, collect factual information to report to the authorities, so that they can determine whether or not the incident constitutes abuse and decide how the incident will be handled. · Describe the incident as completely as possible, include info about the dog's physical condition (i.e. sores, cuts or bruises), or any witnessed act committed. Provide a thorough description of the person involved in the abuse. Give a detailed description of the location where the incident occurred, and a date and time. If possible, videotape or photograph evidence. If another person has witnessed the abuse, their report will be corroborating evidence. · Each city and state deals with animal abuse differently. You can find out where to report animal cruelty in your area by visiting the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at www.aspca.org.
In Broward County you can call your local police department, or Broward Animal Care at 954-359-1313.
In Miami-Dade County you can contact Animal Services at 305-884-1101 or the police at 305-595-6263.
Your information and identity will be kept confidential, and they will advise you on the next step to take. Additional Animal Care info at: www.miamidade.gov/animals www.broward.org/animal
Whatever happens with the case you've reported, remember that you have given the abused dog a voice. The dog will be eternally grateful to you for putting a stop a life that may have been cut short by neglect and abuse and will always keep that in mind when they're creating happy, fresh moments with their new family!
