Family Dog Central is Your
Dog's Shelter for the Storm
As summer approaches, South Florida begins preparing for the season -
the hurricane season. This year, the forecasters expect a "well
above-average" 2008 hurricane season with 15 named storms forecast to form
in the Atlantic. For most people, this means
stocking up on canned goods, water and batteries. For families with pets, it
means much more. With four major storms expected to develop this season, pet
owners living in evacuation zones and mobile homes should plan to act rather
than react.
"Don't ever leave a family member behind during a storm,"
stressed Joanna Goriss, owner of Family Dog Central, a dog daycare and
overnight stay facility in Deerfield Beach. "You have choices for
your dog if you plan to leave home. First ask a friend or family member to keep
your dog, or go to Humane Society and register for the one public shelter that
takes dogs - there's only one in Broward county, so it's not an option
for everyone."
Another
option is a private boarding facility. Family Dog Central is one such safe
haven for dogs which provides peace of mind for owners.
"We
are an approved hurricane shelter constructed in 2007 with impact glass! We are
outside of evacuation zones, but still conveniently located for people who live
in Broward and Palm Beach counties," said Goriss,
who's also a Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida volunteer and certified in
dog first aid and CPR.
"During
the storm - we will NEVER leave the dogs. We have generator power and air
conditioning for the facility and our staff will be here 24/7 during the storm
offering dog group play - so the dogs won't even know there's a storm!" she added.
The key is planning prior to the storm, not during, or when the storm is "on its
way". Dogs must be pre-registered, and meet all of the enrollment requirements including being at least 4
months old, spayed or neutered, current on
vaccinations (including bordatella), and on flea/tick preventative. Dogs applying
for Family Dog Central must also come for a Trial Day to ensure the social
environment is the best environment for them.
"Plan
NOW," stressed Goriss. "When a storm is coming is
NOT the time to start, and besides - Trial Day is free right now, so why
wait? During a storm, many other boarding facilities will close, but FDC will be open, but you
must pre-register."
Spaces
are limited at Family Dog Central. So this year, the facility is offering
guaranteed booking for a limited number of dog clients to be sold on a
first-come, first served basis. The cost of this "storm insurance" is $100 and
it ensures a dog's space for the entire 2008 hurricane season. Once you have a
spot secured, overnight and day rates during a storm will cost the same as
their everyday rates.
The
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. So whether
you're planning to leave or planning to stay, visit the Family Dog Central
website for tips on preparing your dog's survival kit and for more instructions
on what to do before, during and after the storm.
Family Dog
Central is located at 1807 S. Powerline Road, Suite 101 in Deerfield Beach. Find out more by calling

Quick Reference Guide to
Help You & Your Dog Prepare for a Hurricane
Before the Storm
Be sure that your dog is wearing ID tags 100% of the
time and has an online registered microchip ID - this is critical to finding
your lost dog. Print out (and keep in safe
place) this Reference Guide - this way you will have info at your fingertips -
if the power goes out! Prepare a
Dog Survival Kit with the following items:
- Crate/carrier large enough for the dog to turn around in
- Leashes/Collars
- Food/Treats/Water
- Food
dishes
- Toys
and/or blanket
- Phone
numbers for veterinarian, animal shelters and friends/relatives
- Photo
of the dog (to prove you are the owner)
- Veterinary
records (rabies certificate & license tag number)
- Medications
(with instructions)
-
Cleaning
supplies (newspaper, plastic bags with ties, paper towels, disinfectant)
Store all items in containers that are easy to transport
and won't easily tear or break. Do not use plastic or paper bags or
pillowcases. Use waterproof containers to store items that would be damaged if
wet.
If you live
in a hurricane evacuation zone/mobile home or plan to leave your home during the storm
try to coordinate with friend/family who lives in secure area to take your dog
in the event of a storm or if this is not an option - Go to Humane Society
website for list of list of hotels and/or boarding facilities who accept
dogs. Make sure to select a facility not
in evacuation zone! As a last resort,
pre-register (you must go there and bring ALL required documents) for the Humane
Society/Red Cross Shelter (we have one in Broward County and it is located in
Tamarac).
During the Storm
Bring your dog inside - NEVER leave them outside and keep them in your
sight or in crate for their protection
After the Storm
Use caution allowing dogs outdoors after the storm passes. Always leash dogs and remember familiar
scents and landmarks may be altered and they can become confused. Downed power lines and high water could also
present danger. If your dog is lost,
your should visit and look for your dog at Broward County Animal Care &
Regulation - keep in mind - there are 2 shelters - one in Pompano and the big
one in Fort Lauderdale next to the airport.
More info can be found on their website, www.broward.org/animal. Another
place to look would be at the Humane Society of Broward County - off of Griffin
Road and I-95. If you live near the Palm Beach or Miami-Dade county lines -
check with the local shelters there too.
We suggest you visit the shelters very frequently just in case your dog
turns up.

What makes FDC unique?
Family Dog
Central is your dog daycare and overnight stay solution in Deerfield Beach,
Florida. Our dog daycare & overnight environment is very different than the
traditional dog boarding or dog kennel environment. Here's
the scoop (or should we say poop!) on why Dogs Dig This Place!
If your dog
is social and likes other dogs and people then your dog will love coming to
Family Dog Central. When you look up "dog boarding kennel" it says it is a place where dogs are housed temporarily
for a fee. Family Dog Central provides
so much more than that. You can be
confident knowing your dog is being treated like a member of our family. We
provide your dog social interaction while building positive behavior - our dogs
are together in an open group setting (except for naptime, mealtime &
bedtime). Our environment provides your dog a structured, interactive and
consistent place to come and release energy.
And when we say all day, we mean it.
Daycare is 7am - 7pm Monday through Friday, and 10am - 4pm Saturday &
Sunday. We are even here at night with
the dogs - a feature you won't find in traditional kennels.
Prior to
your dog's stay, we need a completed dog application, up-to-date
vaccination records and then each dog comes for what we call "Trial Day". If
all goes well, your dog is welcome back anytime. During Trial Day, we ensure that your dog is
going to love it here - if they are scared, nervous, aggressive or just not
having a good time hanging with the other dogs we will tell you. We can even try and help you find other
alternatives that work better for your dog, because we understand our
environment is not for all dogs.
Similar to
"kid care", we do our best to keep all the dogs on the same schedule so we ask
that they arrive by 10am. The dogs play in the morning,
naptime is from 1pm till 3pm, then play in the afternoon and snooze the
night away if they are staying over. For
pickups we are very flexible - you can pick up your dog any time prior to 7pm, even Sundays!
We provide
the highest standards - our approach is simple - keep in safe, clean and fun
for the dogs at all times. We focus on
the dog's needs and providing them the quality care and environment where they
will want to keep coming back for more!
Safety is our main concern and the entire staff at Family Dog Central is
trained in basic dog training, dog first aid/CPR, certified by the Pet Care
Services Association, and we use positive & consistent training methods
while your dog is here with us. We are
dog people and have completed many hours of dog-related seminars, hands-on dog
pack behavior training. We are active in
the dog rescue community and continue to devote countless hours to dog related
charities.
We offer all-inclusive pricing where there are NO extra charges for anything! Family
Dog Central believes that office time, belly rubs, taking medicine, special diets, phone calls home, and even exit baths are all part of the
experience every dog benefits from here. Family Dog Central even publishes "The
Daily Dirt", our dog blog providing pictures and updates to all of our dogs' parents!
Is FDC more than a dog boarding kennel? You better believe it!
