FDC is hosting dog safety night

Tails are waggin' for Family Dog Central's first ever Dog Health & Safety Expo scheduled for Tuesday, July 22 from 6-9pm here at Family Dog Central in Deerfield Beach.

We're teaming up with Sun States Animal Blood Bank, Furballs & Fleabags, and Dog Massage by Hope to bring a South Florida first!

Sign up for a special Dog First Aid and CPR class where you'll learn the critical skills that could save the life of your family dog. Pre-registration is required, and Sun States requests a $20 minimum donation for the class. FDC will be offering tips on hurricane safety and preparedness. Hope will be here giving dog massages with all proceeds going to Sun States. We will also have human snacks and dog treats to enjoy.

Don't miss out on this great opportunity, and invite your friends. Call us at 954-360-2871 to register today.

Holistic Dog Ownership Takes Total Commitment

So, you want to be a holistic dog owner, but you're not quite sure what that means? The short definition of holistic is looking at the whole dog, as well as the root problems, rather than just the symptoms. Basically, you have to look at your dog as individual, and take into consideration their age, breed, overall health, lifestyle, and even your own level of commitment as the owner.

Feeding your dog a raw diet, aromatherapy, visiting a veterinary acupuncture specialist, and even dog massages are all part of the holistic approach. Holistic health care tries to return the body to balance and heal from within, instead of resorting to drugs or surgery. You might even want to start your dog on a holistic path from puppyhood by starting home-prepared meals, keeping unnecessary vaccines to a minimum, and finding a vet who believes in the holistic approach.

There are lots of terms to understand once you've made the decision to switch, and below you'll find some of the more common lingo and their meanings.

Homeopathy- Sometimes this is confused with holistic, but is actually a complex healing system based on the theory of "like cures like." The thinking is that if a large amount of something can cause symptoms, then a small amount can return the body's balance and possibly cure them.

Modality- This just means method of treatment. Chiropractic and homeopathic are both different forms of this and a vet can target just one of these specialties, or can have backgrounds in several.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - This is a healing system that incorporates herbs and acupuncture. The idea of TCM is that life-sustaining energy, or chi, flows throughout the body, and when it's blocked, disease may occur.

To find a holistic vet in South Florida - call us at FDC - 954-360-2871 and we can recommend a few depending on where you live!
Family Dog Central Helps Labs Find Forever Homes

Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida LogoThe success continues!

We've told you about the new homes for  Callaway and Bosco, and now we have three more labs: Ace, Flash & Ralph that were able to find homes here at FDC!

Flash, Ralph and Ace all had the privilege of staying and playing at FDC while they waited for their forever home. All were adopted out to great families and are so thankful to Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida (and all the great volunteers) who donate their time and love so they can find a family who will truly love them!

To find out how you can become a volunteer, or just learn more about Lab Rescue, visit their website at www.labradorrescue.net.
